One of the best modern ways of setting an avatar picture that will appear for your profile in the forums is using a service called Gravitar.
Gravitar allows you to have a global avatar picture that will be automatically added as your profile picture on this website and almost any others you join automatically.
It is simple and quick.

Simply start by going to http://en.gravatar.com/
At the top click on login/signup
Once signed up you can add a photo (any photo)
Done

It may take a couple of refreshes but your gravitar avatar will now show everytime you login to the new NZMPBA website.

Thats how I did it, works sweet, pops up on other forums like Intl Waters too etc...
